Historic Achievement: India’s Cultural Treasures Inscribed in UNESCO Memory of the World Asia-Pacific Regional Register.
Ulaanbaatar, May 8, 2024* – The 10th meeting of MOWCAP (Memory of the World Committee for Asia and the Pacific) marked a significant milestone as three nominations from India were successfully inscribed into the UNESCO Memory of the World Asia-Pacific Regional Register. Held from May 6-10, 2024, in Ulaanbaatar, the meeting brought together 38 delegates from member states along with 40 observers and nominators.
The nominations, meticulously presented by Prof. Ramesh Chandra Gaur, Dean (Administration) and incharge of the Nodal Centre of UNESCO Memory of the World Programme at IGNCA, included:

1. The Manuscript of the Sahṛdayāloka-Locana: Seminal Text of Indian Poetics
2. The Manuscripts of the Pañcatantra: Proto-text of Moral Fables Adapted Worldwide
3. The Illustrated Manuscripts of Rāmacaritamānasa of Tulasīdā

Following thorough discussions and recommendations by the Register Sub-Committee (RSC), and subsequent voting by representatives of member states, all three nominations were successfully inscribed, marking the first-ever Indian entries since the register’s inception in 2008.

These inscriptions not only celebrate India’s rich cultural heritage but also contribute to global awareness and understanding. The inclusion of renowned Indian epics like the Ramayana through Rāmacaritamānasa of Goswami Tulsidas, and timeless moral fables of the Pañcatantra, enriches the collective cultural tapestry of humanity. Additionally, the recognition of texts such as Sahṛdayāloka-Locana highlights the significance of ancient Indian aesthetics and literary contributions.

“This achievement is a testament to India’s commitment to preserving and sharing its cultural legacy with the world,” remarked Prof. Ramesh Chandra Gaur. “These inscriptions not only honor our past but also pave the way for increased awareness and engagement with the Memory of the World Programme in India.”
